NO MORE NO LESS

EKKI MINNA performs, curates, and collaborates.
Via their multifaceted interdisciplinary approach, they discover and share genre-fluid avenues of expression and communication. Described as “self-consciously quirky” and “melt[ing] us all, via choreography, into another plain altogether”, they consciously expand the accordion & cello formation beyond instrumentation into something introspective and conscious.

NO MORE NO LESS, recorded and co-created by Sebastian V Olsen is a journey of contrasts passing through microtonal ambient, central European avant-garde, Icelandic synth-pop, and 2010’s contemporary Danish with a hint of Schubert lieder.

Christian Winther Christensen’s use of musical quotes is at the fore in Licht tanzt freundlich vor mir Her. Fragments from Franz Schubert’s lied Täuschung echo through the impossibly discreet electronics and equally impossible sounds from the instruments, returning to the listener as a ghostly echo of Schubert’s timeless classic. The duo recorded their own arrangement of the original Täuschung as a beacon and reference for the listener.

Johannes Kreidler is a Berlin-based composer, concept- and media artist. The work Privataufführungen is a 2004 work, whose title harkens back to the listening sessions Arnold Schoenberg hosted in Vienna. Violent, inhuman tempo changes and algorithmic repetitions pervade this instrumental work of extraordinary vitality and virtuosity. This is the premiere recording.

Mads Emil Dreyer’s atmospheric soundscapes rehabilitate the listener after Privatauffuhrüngen. Vidder 1 was composed for EKKI MINNA in 2019 utilising manipulated recordings of the duo’s instruments. When the boundaries between the manipulation and the acoustic instruments become mystified, it is nothing short of magical:

“The sustained tones from accordion and cello sounded like achingly slow breathing, but with each inhalation merging into the following exhalation, and vice versa, resulting in something like an instrumental circular breathing. Slowly shifting and overlapping, always falling somewhere mysteriously between consonance and dissonance (at no point did it really feel like either), it was ravishingly beautiful.”
- Simon Cummings

The closing track of NO MORE NO LESS is Áslaug Magnúsdóttir’s ‘a lot of ANGELS to Consider’, a dramatic, autotune-laden symphonic landscape of sonorous sound. Developed from a close collaboration between EKKI MINNA and Áslaug, the work evokes strong images of nature - both at its harshest, as well as at its most fragile.

With this mix of energetic works from across musical spectrums, the pieces curated within the album reflect the duo's genre-fluid focus and forward-looking ideals.
